Articles A difficult diesel generator system

16 Jan 2012

The performance requirements for data centres and for colocation are increasing all the time. Ten years ago, the fact that a data centre had a backup generator and could generate mains power when the mains failed was enough. Today it isn’t. Customers demand more, and new data centres being built are at N+1 – that is they not only have a backup generator, but they have another backup generator in case the first one fails to start, or there is a mains failure when one is being serviced. The introduction of Tier Levels from US-based organisations mandates at least two generator sets for the facility to be at Tier 3 level, either of which can support the entire facility electronic load. Customers in the market want such levels of performance and are increasingly asking for them and asking technical questions about the level of redundancy and resilience that a facility has. Facilities which cannot provide and demonstrate the necessary levels lose credibility and business and get left behind by the market.

Blog Three quarters of firms may not fully recover computer systems after an IT faliure

24 Nov 2011

Following a report by IT group EMC which found that three quarters of firms and public sector organisations across nine European countries may not fully recover their computer systems or data after an IT failure. Roger Keenan, managing director of City Lifeline, says:  “It is astonishing how many smaller enterprises do not think about how reliant they are on their computers and their data.  Companies start small and grow.  They begin with a couple of PC’s, then buy a server or two and plug them into the nearest 13 amp socket. Then suddenly, the entire business ends up dependant on the contents of the server-cupboard-under-the-stairs.  This is fine until something happens – a fire, a break-in, or a power failure which crashes the server discs and loses all the information.

Articles Supercomputing – The Silver Lining to the cloud

06 Oct 2011

A topic that has been, and will be on the mind of any CIO or IT manager is budget cuts. With the economic downturn still looming, this is something that every company has had to deal with. So as IT spending has been forced to be re-evaluated, we have seen more companies looking to hosting providers for their IT needs. Moving to a hosting provider can save money in many ways; firstly there isn’t the need to purchase servers as they can be leased through a hosted service. This eliminates the need to provide storage for them, power them, cool them or even provide maintenance for them. This will free up valuable resources internally. So as we continue to see more businesses move towards outsourced environments, we are also seeing more complex services venture into the hosted industry.

Articles NGD Europe – As green as the Welsh Valleys

04 Oct 2011

A multi-million pound project in South Wales has transformed a former 750,000 sq ft semiconductor plant into Europe’s largest data centre. Opened last year NGD Europe offers multiple tenants scalable, custom built data halls with the power resources to match, all from one supersize environmentally-friendly tier 3+ facility. Drawing power from 100 per cent renewable energy sources, there has been from the outset a strong emphasis on energy efficiency and environmental credentials.

Next generation data centres not only have to tick all the boxes on space, security, power and connectivity but also guarantee far superior environmental performance than their predecessors. With data centres forecast to consume globally almost 2 billion kilowatt hours of electricity by 2020 (Greenpeace) and in the face of an increasingly onerous regulatory landscape, operators are under pressure to deliver optimised energy environments to satisfy compliance as well as more demanding environmental expectations from customers.

23 Aug 2010

When choosing a designer for a proposed data centre it is vital to understand that the process should not just focus around price. Blog Are Data Centers complying with Executive Order 13514?

17 Aug 2010

Joe Polastre writes: In October, 2009, President Obama issued an Executive Order (EO 13514) that set federal energy efficiency standards. EO 13514 superceeds the previous executive order put in place by President Bush (EO 13423) from 2007. While the previous order required the government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3% per year, totaling at least a 30% reduction by 2015 from 2003 levels, Obama's order actually lets each department set their own goal. EO 13514, in contrast to EO 13423, is much more specific about the improvements that have to be made in transportation fleets, building design, etc. Just to be clear, this order only applies to federal government and their respective organizations, not the country at large. You can think of it as a government-specific climate bill.

Articles Strategies for Solving the Datacenter Space, Power, and Cooling Crunch: Sun Server and Storage Optimization Techniques

16 Aug 2010

By meeting the requirements to deploy new applications and support a larger number of internal and external customers, IT organizations are facing a space, power, and cooling crunch. Silo-architected legacy applications that do not share resources and energy-inefficient legacy servers that are sized to handle the maximum possible workload have pushed data centers to the limits of space and energy consumption. Many datacenters built to last 10 to 15 years have reached a premature end of life because they were not meant to support the growth that has actually taken place.

However there are plenty of examples where it is just the other way around. For years the processor market was driven by the battle between Intel and AMD this battle was fought where the volume was and is – consumer PCs. Another good example is the keyboard interface. Servers still used PS/2 when it was already hard to get a non-USB keyboard for consumer PCs. Also the good old VGA interface has only survived in the metal rack cabinets of data centers and data rooms.
