Articles NGD Europe – As green as the Welsh Valleys

04 Oct 2011

A multi-million pound project in South Wales has transformed a former 750,000 sq ft semiconductor plant into Europe’s largest data centre. Opened last year NGD Europe offers multiple tenants scalable, custom built data halls with the power resources to match, all from one supersize environmentally-friendly tier 3+ facility. Drawing power from 100 per cent renewable energy sources, there has been from the outset a strong emphasis on energy efficiency and environmental credentials.

Next generation data centres not only have to tick all the boxes on space, security, power and connectivity but also guarantee far superior environmental performance than their predecessors. With data centres forecast to consume globally almost 2 billion kilowatt hours of electricity by 2020 (Greenpeace) and in the face of an increasingly onerous regulatory landscape, operators are under pressure to deliver optimised energy environments to satisfy compliance as well as more demanding environmental expectations from customers.

News Can increasing the environmental temperature in data centres up to 27°C to save energy risk network switch failures and lost packets?

30 May 2011

Daxten presents a passive cooling solution for network equipment with side air intakes.

Since 2008 The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air‐Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) expanded their recommended environmental envelope temperature range for IT equipment intake between 18 and 27 degrees Celsius to save energy and add additional cooling options in data centres. Any additional degree Celsius above the starting temperature reduces cooling unit loads by approximately three percent. This translates directly to the possible energy savings. Improving cooling efficiency of the servers is a source of dramatic energy consumption reduction with relatively little effort. There is a catch – due to increasing supply air temperatures the number of failures and packet losses from network switches and routers is significantly raised. The increased packet loss is caused when best practices like cold aisle containment, blanking panels and rack side baffles are implemented. Servers and other network equipment that pulls air from the front of the rack do not have problems as they pull air from the cold aisle. Network switches and routers that pull air from the side are pulling heated exhaust air from the servers, which is often in excess of 35 to 40 degrees Celsius. These devices have no way to access the cool air from the cold aisle and tend to overhead causing packet loss and communication failures. To solve this problem, Daxten, a leading provider of data centre cooling optimisation solutions, extends its portfolio with the SwitchAirBox.

The driving impetus for recommending 277V power to the rack was two-fold – improved efficiencies and lower costs.

Blog Are Data Centers complying with Executive Order 13514?

17 Aug 2010

Joe Polastre writes: In October, 2009, President Obama issued an Executive Order (EO 13514) that set federal energy efficiency standards. EO 13514 superceeds the previous executive order put in place by President Bush (EO 13423) from 2007. While the previous order required the government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3% per year, totaling at least a 30% reduction by 2015 from 2003 levels, Obama's order actually lets each department set their own goal. EO 13514, in contrast to EO 13423, is much more specific about the improvements that have to be made in transportation fleets, building design, etc. Just to be clear, this order only applies to federal government and their respective organizations, not the country at large. You can think of it as a government-specific climate bill.

Articles Strategies for Solving the Datacenter Space, Power, and Cooling Crunch: Sun Server and Storage Optimization Techniques

16 Aug 2010

By meeting the requirements to deploy new applications and support a larger number of internal and external customers, IT organizations are facing a space, power, and cooling crunch. Silo-architected legacy applications that do not share resources and energy-inefficient legacy servers that are sized to handle the maximum possible workload have pushed data centers to the limits of space and energy consumption. Many datacenters built to last 10 to 15 years have reached a premature end of life because they were not meant to support the growth that has actually taken place.

Christian Paetz form Raritan writes:

One would assume that data centers are a place where high tech gets introduced and the mass PC market is a followers market. However there are plenty of examples where it is just the other way around. For years the processor market was driven by the battle between Intel and AMD this battle was fought where the volume was and is – consumer PCs. Another good example is the keyboard interface. Servers still used PS/2 when it was already hard to get a non-USB keyboard for consumer PCs. Also the good old VGA interface has only survived in the metal rack cabinets of data centers and data rooms.

Raritan's Power IQ solution measures the power at each outlet and consolidates that information. The Raritan solution turns this data into energy in the form of kilowatt hours and allows you to roll up that information at various levels of hierarchy within your data center so you can report your actual power used at an IT device level, at a rack level, at a row level, at a room level, at a floor level, or a data center level. The system easily allows you to then take that data that you've aggregated up and report on that data in our analytics page. This video shows how to generate those customizable reports. This solution works with APC, Geist, Avocent and many more PDUs.
