Increased awareness of private cloud benefits influence drivers for adoption
Demand for private clouds remains undiminished in 2010, with 28% of organisations planning a deployment in 2010, according to the third annual benchmark survey of delegates by Platform Computing at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC'10) in June. While the level of intent to deploy is the same as in 2009 (also 28%), the main drivers have changed dramatically, reflecting improved awareness and understanding of the benefits of private clouds. As the leader in cluster, grid and cloud management software, Platform Computing has been tracking adoption of private clouds and the drivers for uptake.

Colt has published the results of a European CIO survey that demonstrates that awareness of cloud services among CIOs and senior IT decision makers has increased by over 20 per cent in just seven months. Over 68 per cent of CIOs and their peers are now saying that they are familiar with cloud technology. The UK has the highest levels of awareness (77%) followed by Germany (75%), France (71%) and Italy (66%). Spain has the lowest levels of familiarity with cloud services, with 58 per cent of CIOs and their peers saying they are familiar with the technology.

A data centre designed and built by Keysource for oil exploration surveyor Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) has achieved an annualised PUE of just 1.17, making it one of the most energy-efficient facilities of its kind in Europe. As a result, the data centre has achieved first year savings of £650,000 and a 6.7 million KWh drop in power consumption, equating to a 2.9 million kg reduction in CO2 emissions.

Equinix has announced plans to build its third International Business Exchange™ (IBX) in Sydney, Australia. The new IBX data center, called SY3, will significantly increase the company’s Sydney capacity to meet the high demand for premium colocation and interconnection data center services in the Sydney market. The $65 million first phase of the SY3 IBX data center will add 1,000 cabinets and is targeted for opening during the second quarter of 2011.
