Coping with security demons – encryption in optical networks
22 Aug 2011
While IT managers and CIOs have done much to protect servers, databases, routers, and switches, truly secure communications will only be possible if the network protection is extended beyond the walls of the data centre. Many still think that fibre optic networks are intrinsically secure because they use light rather than electrical current to transmit data between network points.

We’re all wise to the risks our online antics pose to our security. We’ve learned not to trust emails from Nigerian Bankers offering to share millions in exchange for a small upfront handling fee. Our banks haven’t monitored fraudulent activity so they don’t need us to verify our account details by confirming our information. Messages from DHL with attachments informing us about deliveries we’re not expecting don’t fool us into opening the document. “I wasn’t surprised by the estimate in today’s report that in 2010, data centres accounted for between 1.1% and 1.5% of the world's total energy consumption, as ICT becomes pervasive in delivering products and services to increasing number of people across the globe. We know that in order to reduce the environmental impact of IT, the green data centre needs to be at the heart of the whole movement towards sustainable computing. Date centre operators need to work with local and international government bodies, industry associations like the European Commission, the UKs Carbon Reduction Commitment and The Green Grid to better understand the role they can play in reducing the carbon footprint associated with their ICT infrastructure.
